Four days in Fitzroy Falls

Arrived Wednesday afternoon at Twin falls bush cabins which coincidently is the location for the Fitzroy falls marathon,a quiet spot nestled beside Fitzroy falls on the Nowra road between Kangaroo valley and Moss Vale in the southern highlands of N.S.W., 600m above sea level. We had great weather with no rain to speak of and clear but very cool days and even colder nights (we had the fire on permanently).

Thursday

Ran at 9.00am, 3k warm-up beside the dam to the road that heads to Robertson.
1 x 2k in 7.16 (3.38, 3.38) slightly uphill in to wind.

1k float 4.40

1x2k in 7.01 (3.38,3.23) downhill with tailwind.

5.5k jog back via visitor centre and trails.

4.00pm, easy run of 4.5k - jogged around the east and west rim of falls.

Total = 18k.

Friday

9.00am very easy 8k along Red Hills fire trail and return. Hilly run.

Saturday

Ran from cabin along Red Hills fire trail, turned left at Red Hills road and ran until I came to a locked gate (private property) then return. Fire trail is in poor condition in some parts, quite wet and loose gravel in some parts with streams cutting the fire trail in other locations which meant a fair bit of sidestepping and longcuts to avoid wet shoes ( I hate frozen toes !). Had 2 major climbs and descents each way, quite hard work. Best k 3.50, worst k 5.26. Good solid effort.

12k total.

Sunday

Same as Saturday but turned right at Red Hills road (5k), about 1k down the road it turned into bitumen so picked up the pace a fair bit, basically downhill all the way to Nowra rd (10k) except one nasty climb, then left back to Fitzroy falls, out to dam and return via visitors centre and trails for 19k in 93 minutes.

Total for the week = 92k. Best week this year in terms of mileage.

Here's a link to the 19k run fitzroy falls 19k

Don't forget to pick satellite as their are no maps for this region. You can zoom in quite close and see the cabins we stayed in. This would make a great place for a runners training camp - 5 cabins with room for 4-6 in each and heaps of trail running.

Last time we stayed here I did a lot of running on the access trails beside the dam and alongside the channel that runs south to Kangaroo valley but the gates are locked now and have big signs about trespassing so I kept out. You can see the trails clearly at the bottom of the page.

Wow! That's some link, 26miles! Great running! Are you doing the Fitzroy Falls marathon or 10km in October?

Hi L.L, I am thinking about it. If training continues along o.k. I want to do a low key marathon and F.Falls would be tough but fun !
